The Audience Has Spoken: CanUX 2017 Statistics

December 2, 2017 by corneliux

Immediately following CanUX 2017 we sent out an online feedback survey link hoping to evaluate how we’ve done (we are suckers for research, what can we say). 46.8% (246 of the 525) of participants responded (the highest number we’ve ever had to date), and this article is a distilled version of what we’ve learned. But before we proceed, we would like to once again thank each and every single one of you who took 2 minutes to answer our quick survey back in November.

The first set of figures shows how CanUX has progressed in its eight years in Ottawa. Our geographical coverage is now reaching coast to coast from Halifax to Vancouver. Our speaker lineup is getting more diverse ever year, and while our the numbers are down one percent this year to 95% (a rating we’re still very proud of), having a high profile speaker cancel an appearance relatively last minute, this is more than understandable. Our venue feedback went back up to at 99% which ties the highest the approval rating we’ve had every year since we moved the conference to the beautiful Canadian Museum of History.

The 2017 edition of CanUX was our 8th straight sellout.

From a content perspective, our 20 speakers hailing from 5 countries on 4 different continents seem to have created a diverse and engaging program as shown by our content figures below. Also, the variety of session lengths (from 50 minute keynotes down to 15 minute short talks) seems to work quite well in a single track format.

From an organizational perspective, statistically, 2017 was our second best ever, as our approval rating leveled at 96%, down 2% from last year. Given a string of AV issues that have surfaced during some of the session, we’re still very happy that so many of you agree or strongly agree that CanUX is a well organized endeavour, and we’ll direct all of our efforts to improve the areas where we’ve fallen a bit short this year. We consider this as another strong endorsement to keep doing our thing. And since almost 71.5% of you (our highest number ever, up from 67% last year) think that CanUX is better or significantly better than other conferences you’ve been to, we’d like to think that overall we’re heading in the right direction.

The CanUX 2017 session content was appropriate.
