CMU’s Carol J. Smith Will Tackle Trustworthy AI in 2025

A renowned researcher joins the CanUX 2025 festivities.

Speaker Bio: Carol J. Smith
AI Design

Carol Smith is the AI Trust Lab Lead and principal research scientist in the AI Division of the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU)’s Software Engineering Institute. She leads research focused on development practices that result in trustworthy, human-centered, and responsible AI and autonomous systems. Carol began her career in 2001 and has led research to integrate ethics and improve human experiences with AI systems, autonomous vehicles, and other complex and emerging technologies for the past 10 years.

Carol is recognized globally for her research, and has presented over 250 talks and workshops in over 40 cities around the world. She has a long history of volunteering including serving as Co-Chair of the IA Conference in 2023; serving as VP, Board Member, and Conference Chair for UXPA; and she is an ACM Distinguished Speaker. Carol is also an adjunct instructor for the CMU HCII and holds a Master of Science degree in HCI from DePaul University.
