Jared Spool returns to CanUX in 2017

CanUX adds an eminent keynote address to our 8th edition.

Beyond the UX Tipping Point
} Nov 5, 2017   9:00am / 45 MINUTES

For the longest time, making a great experience for the user was a business-strategy luxury item. A great product only had to work and ship. A great experience was a nice-to-have, not a requirement. Times have changed. The cost of delivering a product is no longer a barrier to entry. Quality is no longer a differentiator. What’s left? The user’s experience.

Every part of the organization must be infused with an understanding of great design. Your organization has to cross the UX Tipping Point. You must increase everyone’s exposure to users, communicate a solid experience vision, and install a culture of continual learning. With that, design will become your organization’s competitive advantage.

Jared will show you and your team:
– Which path organizations take to become design-infused
– How a centralized UX team is a stepping stone to a more UX capable organization
– Why the market needs to demand a better experience before it will matter
– What your organization will need to do to cross the UX Tipping Point

Speaker Bio: Jared M. Spool

To state that Jared M. Spool is a superhero in the field of experience design is quite possibly a colossal understatement. He spent his professional life sharing his expertise with UX communities all over the world, and this year we are elated to announce that he is returning to Ottawa for the third time in his career, after delivering our opening keynote in 2012 and running a full-day CapCHI workshop in 2000. Jared is the founder and CEO of UIE, a leading research, training, and consulting firm headquartered just North of Boston, MA, and the co-founder of Center Centre, a revolutionary user experience design school based in Chattanooga, TN.

If you’ve ever seen Jared speak about user experience (UX) design you are one lucky son of a gun. And you’re probably aware that he’s likely the most effective and knowledgeable communicator on the subject today. He started working in the field of usability and user experience back in in 1978, before the terms “usability” and “UX” were ever associated with computers (for carbon dating purposes, that was shortly after the Apple II personal computer was introduced to the masses :). While he led UIE, the industry research firm he started in 1988, the field of UX design emerged and Jared helped define what makes UX designers successful all over the world. UIE’s world-class research organization produces conferences and workshops all over the world and for companies in every industry.

In 2016, with Dr. Leslie Jensen-Inman, he opened Center Centre, a brand new school that creates the next generation of industry-ready UX Designers. They created a unique approach to vocational training, infusing Jared’s decades of UX experience with Leslie’s mastery of experience-based learning methodologies. You’ll also find him as the conference chair and keynote speaker at the annual UI Conference and UX Immersion Conference, and he manages to squeeze in a fair amount of writing time. He is author of Web Site Usability: A Designer’s Guide (1998) and co-author of Web Anatomy: Interaction Design Frameworks That Work (2009). You’ll find his writing at uie.com.

Jared is also an amateur magician. You can follow his adventures on the Twitters at @jmspool, where he tweets daily about UX design, design strategy, design education, and the wondrous customer service habits of the airline industry.
