Mark Bottomley will talk about the UX of Prison Doors

The subject matter will be a first for a Canadian UX conference.

It’s Just a Door: Door Control in a Prison
} Nov 3-4, 2018   TIME TBD / 25 MINUTES

Correctional Service Canada operates 43 institutions across Canada. They range from minimum to super-max security and include 3 institutions that are over a century old. Their door controls is are old as the institutions themselves. Controlling doors in those institutions is best described as backwards compatible to the standards found in all other implementations. There are an interesting number of considerations, from the environment to the users, from the door types to the security levels, and from daily operation to emergencies. During this presentation, Mark will take us through the challenges in attempting to standardize, and eventually optimize, this seemingly simple control system.

Speaker Bio: Mark Bottomley

Mark is a Systems Engineer who currently works for Correctional Service Canada. His background is varied with an Engineering degree from Queen’s University in Mathematics and Engineering, Computer Science option and a Masters in Computing Science. He has worked in military systems R&D at General Dynamics and on the J9 Java virtual machine at IBM. His current position primarily involves system design and requirements specification for the electronic security systems inside Canada’s federal prisons. Mark also holds the Certified Protection Professional and the Physical Security Professional designations from ASIS International.

System design for this environment has many challenges including viewing the system from the inside out. It is an environment where the normal security design criteria of Deter, Detect, Delay, and Respond are supplemented with Contain, Control, and Isolate. It also involves close cooperation with Security Operations, Departmental Security, Preventative Security, and Construction groups at CSC.
