Through many sleepless nights and long days, the Iron M prosthesis was born. Designed to fit the unique requirements of a local child in need, the creation process involved was a journey of rapid iteration and user feedback. It was designed completely from scratch, beginning with simple cardboard prototypes and eventually evolving into the final 3D printed design. Join Robert and Shannon as they recount this challenging, yet rewarding, experience.
Speaker Bio: Shannon Lee and Robert Rayson
Shannon Lee and Robert Rayson are both third year engineering students at the University of Ottawa. According to Robert, Shannon in particular has a passion for design and for helping people. Which is probably what led them to participate in — and ultimately win — the 2014 University of Ottawa Makerspace Prosthetic Challenge to design a prosthetic hand for a young Ottawa boy.
During the Challenge finale in March 2015, six-year-old Sebastian Chavarria chose their prosthetic arm from a number of submissions designed by students, engineers and members of the community.
